"Bella Figura" Type 57S Coupe
FRAME AND CHASSIS
For more than a year we investigated a variety of directions to go regarding the chassis for our BELLA FIGURA. These included ultra modern full monocoque carbon fiber tubs from former Corvette engineers, space frame chassis as well as a number of variations of the traditional and popular "ladder" type frame. We flew to England twice to visit fabricators, checked out several name sports car chassis builders in Atlanta, Detroit and California who all do nice work, as well as top street rod and street machine chassis builders. One thing we were looking for was a business which had adequate manpower and room to build a number of turnkeys simultaneously. The real bottom line, however, was a shop that produced top quality work.
A new customer whom we are embarking on an aluminum bodied BELLA FIGURA project for, had us take a look at THE ROADSTER SHOP in Mundelein, IL. As a former Editor of HOT ROD and CAR CRAFT Magazines and staff writer for CAR and DRIVER, I've been in literally dozens and dozens of race and street car fabrication shops in my 69 year lifetime. In that time I've never seen an operation of the scope of THE ROADSTER SHOP. They were working on seventeen different customer's turnkey projects when I was there!
They will be building both our 127-inch wheelbase production chassis and many of our turnkey cars. This ultra modern 30,000 sq. ft. facility with more than 20 skilled fabricators has a 20+ year history of creating many award-winning cars and trucks.
The building was totally renovated in 2007 with a down draft paint booth and 20 foot CNC plasma cutting table, among other improvements. We're digitally creating the BELLA FIGURA chassis with ROADSTER SHOP principal and chassis designer Jeremy Gerber and Chris Gray, one of the guys in their CAD room. We chose this firm because they are unquestionably one of the most professional shops we have ever seen, and we've seen a lot. They can build you a "production" BELLA FIGURA Type 57S, or they can custom fabricate any aspect of the car to suit your imagination. Take the time to read the captions by their front and rear suspension photos to give you an idea why we chose THE ROADSTER SHOP.
In the thirteen years before 2004 when THE ROADSTER SHOP was purchased by Neal, Phillip and Jeremy Gerber, it had achieved a powerhouse status in the street rod, muscle car and street machine fabrication shop field. Since then it has grown almost exponentially in reputation for building some of the very top cars anywhere. Their display of top awards they have won is staggering. Twice, they have won the top award in the industry for muscle car building -- the GOODGUYS STREET MACHINE OF THE YEAR!

Who says lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place?
Barry Blomquist's '62 Corvette won the 2009 GOODGUYS STREET MACHINE OF THE YEAR
competition and Alex Covington's '67 Nova just won the same award in 2011. This is the highest award
in the world of muscle cars. Both were built by THE ROADSTER SHOP.
Note: Several of my very knowledgable friends tell me the 'Vette is hands down the nicest Street Machine
they have ever seen in their lives. It was just featured in the prestegious ROBB REPORT.

The ROADSTER SHOP FAST TRACK Independent Front Suspension uses Corvette C6 spindles, hubs and
lower ball joints, 4140 pre-hardened control arm mounts, and a streamlined crossmember for maximum
ground clearance provides easy access for adjustment of steering rack, sway bar and coilovers.
It uses Acetyl GP bushings for zero deflection compared to industry standard polyurethane. It has positive
and negative jounce bumpers to protect the coilovers from excessive abuse. It uses 75 or more individual
components specifically machined or fabricated. No “off the shelf” parts are used. It has 7075 T-651 billet
steering arms for strength, weight reduction and lower steering rack. The upper control arms are reverse
mounted for simple caster and camber adjustments. The IFS comes with a close ratio power
rack and punion steering.
This is not a photo of the Bella Figura chassis, but representative example of the IFS
we will use as standard equipment on our ROADSTER SHOP chassis.

The 20 foot plasma cutter produces CNC designed steel sheet cut precisely to size.
Four sides of the box frame rail are then stitch welded together in special jigs to custom
fabricate frame rails for each make and model car for which ROADSTER SHOP builds chassis.
Then welding is completed. They have one room just to make frame rails!

The ROADSTER SHOP FAST TRACK Independent Rear Suspension uses 10 gauge mild steel crossmembers
with 1⁄4 inch steel used in high stress areas. Grade 8 fine thread hardware with nylon locking nuts are used.
It is the only IRS with a true upper control arm. For quality and reliability, C6 Corvette spindles, hubs,
sway bar end links are used. It employs 6061 aluminum hex shafts with aurora bearings for tie-rods,
and large diameter Chromoly 934 inner CV joints, with high temp vented boots. It is designed with easy
camber/caster adjustment by removing or adding shims. Performance-driven AFCO Pro Touring coilover
shocks are used along with a splined sway bar with retaining collars for easy track tuning.
This is not a photo of
the Bella Figura chassis, but representative example of the IRS we will use as standard equipment
on our ROADSTER SHOP chassis.
